SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - In a game that was eerily reminiscent of last year's contest, Santa Clara University (2-1-0) senior Jeff Stewart scored his first goal of the season to defeat Oregon State (0-3-0) by a score of 2-1 at the Diadora Classic in San Francisco, Calif.
Stewart's goal came at the 114:06 mark in the second overtime off a precise pass from Kellen Gilmore during a penalty re-start that went directly to Stewart's head in the middle of the penalty box. The Broncos improve to 2-0-0 in overtime contests in the 2001 season while the Beavers slide to 0-2-0 in the same category.
The Broncos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Scott McLain took a cross from Gilmore and slid it past the Beavers netminder at the 7:01 mark in the first half. Gilmore's two assists on the night was a career high for one game for the sophomore.
The score remained the same at the end of the first half as Santa Clara dodged a bullet when Oregon State's Ignacio Sid missed a penalty kick with only 8:48 remaining in the half.
Oregon State tied the score in the second half as Stephen Hensor headed home a goal in the 57th minute off of two precise passes from Cid and Aaron McHardy. Following the Beavers' equalizer the two teams played back-and-forth soccer with each team getting several chances on the net.
Santa Clara outshot the Beavers 6-2 in the overtime periods, thoroughly dominating its opponent and creating scoring chances that were too numerous to stop.
The Broncos will resume action at the Diadora Classic on Sunday, as they will face No. 10 UCLA at Noon in San Francisco.
