Jamil Walker Named Offensive MVP of the Umbro Classic

Oct. 1, 2001

MIAMI, Fla. - Santa Clara University men's soccer forward Jamil Walker (Pittsford, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit HS) was named the offensive MVP as selected by the coaches at the Umbro Classic hosted by Florida International last weekend.

Walker, who leads the Broncos on the season with 28 shots, took six shots in the two games, scoring once. His lone goal of the tournament was the game-winner against James Madison on Sunday, coming off a penalty re-start from outside the box. Walker drilled the free kick over the JMU wall into the upper right portion of the net. In addition to being the game-winner, the goal was the first of the season for the junior and fifth of his career.

Like many of his teammates, Walker has had many near misses thus far this season. Nearly half of his shots this season have been on the mouth of the goal requiring saves. "Jamil is a definite offensive presence with his tremendous speed," said head coach Mitch Murray. "His speed can not only create chances for himself, but for his teammates because the attention that he draws from the defense."

Walker and his teammates return home from Miami, Fla., this week to face Nationally-ranked University of Washington on Friday at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Broncos will then take on Bay Area rival California at 2 p.m. on Sunday in Berkeley, Calif.
