Final Stats

MIAMI, Fla. - Santa Clara University's men's soccer team broke out of its scoring slump on Sunday afternoon in Miami, Florida, as the Broncos defeated James Madison by a score of 2-0 in the Umbro Classic hosted by Florida International University.

Santa Clara (4-4-0) entered Sunday's contest with James Madison (4-3-0) having been held scoreless over the last 191:02, dating back to the Broncos 1-0 win over Long Island University on September 22. Junior Jamil Walker broke that scoreless minute streak by scoring his first goal of the season at the 43:09 mark. Walker's goal came on a penalty re-start, threading the ball over the JMU wall into the upper right corner of the net on the free kick.

Sophomore Philip Johnson gave the Broncos some cushion at the 49:00 mark when he scored his first goal of the season to put the Broncos up 2-0. Johnson took the feed from freshman Zach Knight, who picked up his first collegiate point with the assist, and drilled a shot past the JMU netminder from 10 yards out.

Senior Rusty Johnson picked up his third shutout of the season, giving him 23.5 for his career, the third most of any netminder in Broncos history. Johnson faced 13 shots on the day, making five saves behind his steady defense.

Santa Clara will return home to Buck Shaw Stadium on Friday, October 5, as they host the University of Washington at 7:30 p.m. Two days later the Broncos will travel to the North Bay area to take on California at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
