SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University men's soccer will host the sixth-annual Santa Clara adidas Classic on September 20 and 22 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Joining the Broncos in the classic is Long Island University, Marquette University and the University of San Francisco.
"It's shaping up to be an exciting weekend," said Broncos head coach Mitch Murray. "All the teams coming in are playing quite well. LIU has had a couple of great results in their last performances. Marquette is coming off consecutive 4-0 wins and USF is off to a great start with a 3-1 record. So it is shaping up to be a very even and challenging tournament."
The adidas Classic will be the first action for three of the four teams since the national tragedies that occurred in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. Long Island will be in action on Monday, September 17, against Fordham before heading to the Silicon Valley.
The 23rd-ranked Broncos hit the field again ready to play after a full week of practice. Santa Clara has a 2-2-0 record thus far in the season and has dominated most of the statistical categories. The Broncos have out-shot their opponents by 30 (66-36) shots so far but have been outscored by one (4-3).
Despite being outscored and having a level record, the Broncos remain optimistic about the rest of the year and especially this weekend. "Being the host we expect to come out on top," said Murray, "but we will have to play very well against two good teams this weekend to do that."
