DENVER, Colo. - Former Santa Clara University star and current Colorado Rapids defender Jeff Stewart underwent a MRI on Monday, June 9th by Dr. Wayne Gersoff in Denver, revealing an isolated ACL Tear of the right knee.
The injury will sideline Stewart for a minimum of six months, effectively ending his 2003 season. The 22-year-old suffered the injury in the 10th minute of the Rapids' 0-2 loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy at the new Home Depot Center on Saturday, June 7. Dr. Gersoff will perform the surgery on the Rapids defender next week. The date for the procedure is to be determined once the swelling is reduced.
Stewart, who will turn 23 later this month, has played all eight games for the Rapids in 2003, including every minute since entering the home opener at halftime. The Santa Clara University graduate was acquired by the Rapids in the 2002 SuperDraft (19th overall). As a rookie last season, Stewart started 20-of-23 games and is one of six Rapids players to play in every game this year.
