SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's soccer squad concluded both its road and non-conference seasons with a 1-0 victory over Sacramento State Thursday afternoon at the Hornet Soccer Field in Sacramento, Calif.
Despite playing without defensive standouts Ryan Cochrane and Steve Cronin, both of whom are with the U.S. U-20 National Team, the Broncos (8-6-1) picked up their fourth shutout of the season behind the play of goalkeeper Kent Harkness.
The Hornets (5-8-4) matched Santa Clara shot-for-shot, as each team took 13 in the match, but it was Jeff Scott's shot in the 40th minute that provided the difference on the scoreboard. The freshman from Roseville, Calif., picked up his first collegiate goal after intercepting a pass and blasting home a shot into the left corner of the goal from 30 yards out.
Eight of Santa Clara's 13 shots were on the mouth of the goal, forcing Hornet netminder Matt McDougall to make six saves just to keep Sac State in the contest. Only three of the Hornets' 13 shots were on the mouth of Santa Clara's goal, of which all three were stopped by Harkness.
The Broncos return home next week for a pair of West Coast Conference matches to conclude the regular season. Tuesday night's match with Bay Area rival San Francisco is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's regular season finale against Loyola Marymount is also set to start at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will take place inside Buck Shaw Stadium.
