Men’s Tennis Travels to Pacific Northwest for ITA Regionals

ITA Regional Championships - Singles Bracket | ITA Regional Championships - Doubles Bracket

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Following a two-week hiatus from competitive action, two members of the Santa Clara men's tennis team will return to the courts this weekend for the ITA Regional Championships in Seattle, Wash.

Senior Ashot Khacharyan, who steamrolled his way to the singles final in last year's event, and freshman Robert Seby will be the lone Broncos to make the trip to the University of Washington campus to do battle with competitors from across the Northwest Region during this four-day event, which kicks off Thursday morning.

"This is another great opportunity for our guys to compete against quality opponents," said Head Coach Derek Mills. "The guys are ready for the challenge and we look forward to making a name for ourselves at this regional event like we did last year."

The tournament will consist of a 128-player singles field and a 64-team doubles draw. In the first round of action, Seby will play Felix Fan from the University of Portland at 8:45 a.m. on Thursday while Khacharyan will be resting on the sideline, having earned a bye in the first round. The two Broncos will also compete together in doubles action, opening up play at 2 p.m. on Friday against Jerod Mah and Ryan Marker from the University of San Francisco.

Khacharyan, having yet to play in his first competitive match this season, will look to repeat his performance that he recorded this time last year. Blitzing past six competitors in the singles draw, four of which came as a result of a two-set sweep, the then-junior reached the singles final of the 128-player event.

Alongside Khacharyan, Seby will look to improve upon his 1-2 start to the season in singles play.
