Men's Water Polo Falls to No. 2 Stanford

Oct. 4, 2003

STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team fell to second-ranked Stanford 16-2 this morning in the opening match of the NorCal Tournament, hosted by the Cardinal at the Avery Aquatic Center. The loss moves the Broncos' record to 8-6 on the season.

Senior Logan Gee and junior Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz scored for the Broncos. Junior Peter Moore led the Bronco defense with eight saves in the first three quarters, while senior Floyd Tucker closed out the contest with three blocks in the fourth period.

"We could have played better mentally," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "I think our team played hard physically, but overall, we didn't play our best water polo."

Stanford opened a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, but was held to only four goals in the second frame, as Moore stopped a power play attempt and a penalty shot with just under two minutes remaining until halftime.

Gee put the Broncos on the scoreboard with 1:59 remaining in the third. He took a cross-pool pass from freshman Kevin Starry to make the game 13-1.

With 2:07 remaining in the contest, Flanagan-De La Hoz skipped a pass into the goal, with an assist to Danny Soares.

The NorCal Tournament is one of the premier collegiate water polo events in the country. Fourteen of the 16 teams entered are ranked in the Collegiate Coaches top 20.

Santa Clara will return to the pool this afternoon at 3:20 p.m. against No. 10 UC Santa Barbara. The NorCal Tournament will continue action through Sunday.
