STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team fell to 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara 8-7 this afternoon at the NorCal Tournament, hosted by the Cardinal at the Avery Aquatic Center. The loss moves the Broncos' record to 8-7 on the season.
Daniel Figoni led the Broncos with three goals, while Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz and Sho Yamazaki added two each. Flanagan-De La Hoz also spurred the offense by drawing four kick outs. Peter Moore registered nine blocks in goal.
It was a one-goal match the entire 28 minutes and the Broncos had possession at the end for a chance at a tie, but their attempt didn't go.
"I obviously would have liked to win, but I can't complain about the team's effort," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "It was a break-out game for Sho, getting his first two goals of the season."
The NorCal Tournament is one of the premier collegiate water polo events in the country. Fourteen of the 16 teams entered are ranked in the Collegiate Coaches top 20.
Santa Clara remains at the tournament and will take on Navy at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
