Men's Water Polo Tops UC Santa Cruz
The 19th-ranked Santa Clara University men's water polo team defeated Division III third-ranked UC Santa Cruz 12-7 this afternoon in non-conference action at the Leavey Pool.

The Broncos' Grant Allison scored the first goal of the match after only 26 seconds had elapsed, putting Santa Clara on pace to maintain their lead over the Slugs for the duration of the game. Allison's second goal of the day would come in the second period.

Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz, Daniel Figoni and Kevin Starry also contributed two goals apiece, while Austin Brizgys, Mark Oda, Logan Gee and Sho Yamazaki each posted a goal.

"I think we played well today," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said after the contest. "It is our first home game we have played against good competition. We came out with a high energy level, ready to play. It was an all around team effort and it is always great to play in front of a home crowd."

Netminder Peter Moore led the defense recording 16 saves while facing 25 shots.

"Peter definitely kept us in the game," Wilbur added. "He is one of our top players and is major reason we won today."

Today's match was the fourth meeting of these two teams this season. Santa Clara won the first two before falling to the Slugs two weeks ago at the Davis Shootout.

The Broncos, 16-13 on the season, will close the regular season tomorrow afternoon against 18th-ranked UC Davis at 1 p.m. at the Leavey Pool. The Broncos will honor seniors Figoni, Gee and Floyd Tucker, who will be playing in the last home matches of their collegiate careers.
