SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Santa Clara University men's water polo team will continue its season at this weekend's Shootout, hosted by UC Davis. As the Aggies' new pool is still under construction, matches will be played at Solano Community College in Fairfield.
The Broncos, 14-9 on the season, will open the tournament on Saturday against No. 16 UC Davis at 12:45 p.m. Santa Clara will then take on Brown later that afternoon at 3:45 p.m. Sunday's action will be against sixth-ranked UC Dan Diego at 9:15 a.m. and Division III third-ranked UC Santa Cruz at 1:45 p.m.
Santa Clara's opening match against the Aggies will be a rematch of last weekend's battle at Davis. Tied at 8-8 with one minute to go in regulation, the Broncos missed an opportunity to score with a six-on-five advantage. The Aggies scored the game-winner with 14 seconds remaining in the contest.
"Last weekend we had a tough loss against Davis, but it was a great game," head coach Keith Wilbur recalled. "Our team has been very focused in practice throughout the week, and we are excited to have another chance to play Davis only one week after we lost to them by just one goal.
"I think our teams are pretty evenly matched, so it should be another good game," he continued. "We have made some adjustments based on last week's game, but I am sure they have as well. We also have a good rivalry, so the intensity level will be high, which means the action will be fun to watch. I anticipate another very close match, and hopefully this week we can come out on top."
