SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team downed Cal Maritime Academy by a score of 18-9 Sunday afternoon at the Leavey Pool on the SCU campus. With the win the 17th-ranked Broncos improve to 14-9 overall.

Santa Clara scored after only 15 seconds had gone by in the first quarter at two meter man Whit Gilfillan rifled the ball past Cal Maritime keeper Andrew Hubbard. From there the Broncos would tally six more goals in the quarter and led by a 7-1 count after allowing a CMA goal with only one second remaining in the opening stanza.

The Broncos never looked back from there as they led 12-6 at halftime and 16-7 after three quarters. SCU tallied only two goals in the final quarter of play as the Broncos maintained discipline and worked on their offensive setup.

Gilfillan led a pack of 11 Santa Clara players who scored on the day with his three goals, followed by Jon Greco, Mike Vancura, Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz, Matt Sanchez and Dylan Knee who each had two goals in the match.

Austin Brizgys, Dan Figoni, Logan Gee, Danny Soares and Patrick Noack each scored once for SCU in the match, while Peter Moore and Floyd Tucker split time between the pipes for Santa Clara, as the pair rotated quarters in the pool.

The win comes only one after a heartbreaking 9-8 loss at No. 15 UC Davis Saturday afternoon. SCU will look to avenge that loss next Saturday at the Davis Shootout. The Broncos and Aggies will play at 12:45 p.m. on the UCD campus. Santa Clara will also play Brown, UC Santa Cruz and UC San Diego as part of the tournament.
