LMU Ends Santa Clara's Bid For The WWPA Championship

2010 WWPA Championships Schedule/Results

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 14 Santa Clara men's water polo team fell to No. 8 Loyola Marymount, 11-4, this afternoon in the 2010 WWPA Championships semifinal at Sullivan Aquatic Center.  The Broncos, now 18-15 overall, will close out the 2010 season tomorrow against No. 11 UC San Diego at noon in the WWPA Third Place match.

Derek Milligan put the Lions on the board late in the first quarter, but freshman Theo Nasser equalized on SCU's next possession.  Tibor Forai put LMU back up by one, but junior Brett Zylstra made sure the game stayed tied heading into the second quarter.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, LMU took control of the game in the second, scoring three unanswered goals.  The Lions scored another four unanswered goals in the third quarter to take 9-2 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth LMU scored two more and senior Nick Poggetti finally ended Santa Clara's scoring drought with 3:06 left in the game.  Poggetti added an additional goal with 2:12 to play to put the final score at 11-4.

Junior goalie Michael Wishart made eight saves.  Sophomore John Nash made three saves after relieving Wishart.

Loyola Marymount will play UC Davis in the WWPA Championship tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.  The Aggies beat the Tritons in the second semifinal.
