SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's basketball team defeated Providence 65-49 tonight at Bellarmine Prep Gym. Bronco senior Annie Garrison led all scorers with 17 points.
Santa Clara improves to 2-1 with tonight's victory, while Providence falls to 1-3 on the season.
The Broncos led by no more than six throughout the first half, with the Friars pulling to within two after 20 minutes.
Tied at 38 points apiece with eight minutes left in the game, the Broncos went on a 19-5 run to open up a lead they'd keep after the final score. During that run, Garrison blocked two shots while Ashbaugh dished three assists and scored four points.
Providence finished with three players scoring 10 points each: Jen Gombotz, Jenese Wilcox and Chrissy Vozab.
Sophomore Kendra Rhea added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting, while junior Becki Ashbaugh finished with 9 points and 10 assists. Defensively for the Broncos, Garrison posted 10 rebounds, while senior Jennifer Glysson added 10.
After ceding nine turnovers in the first frame, the Broncos took care of the ball after intermission, adding only one more turnover to their totals.
Santa Clara returns to action for a mid-week game against San Jose State. Originally scheduled for the San Jose Arena, the contest will be the first game of a double-header with the Bronco men at SJSU's Event Center. Tip-off is slated for Wednesday at 5 p.m.
