CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. - Cal State Northridge freshman Beth Allen won her first collegiate tournament en route to leading the Matadors to a two-stroke victory over the University of Denver at the Colby Classic, held at the at Rancho Caņada Golf Club in Carmel Valley this afternoon. Host Santa Clara placed ninth.
Allen's 72-73--145 was just three strokes over par and five strokes ahead of individual runner-up Christine Anast's 75-75--150 for Denver. The Pioneers Jenny Fiedler, CS Northridge's Kelley Carlson and Western New Mexico's Tiada Lane tied for third at a +14 156.
The team victory marked CS Northridge's first-ever on the road. The Matadors finished with a 623, 55 strokes over par. Denver placed two strokes back. Like the fight for first place, third place was just as competitive, with Sacramento State's 657 edging Western New Mexico by one stroke. Boise State and British Columbia tied for fifth with 665s.
Santa Clara placed ninth in the 10-team field with a 737. Sophomore Jessica Abbott led all Broncos with a 30-over 172, good for 31st place.
The Broncos will next be in action at the Stanford Classic, to be held at the Stanford Golf Course April 14-15.
