Women's Golf Eats Italian for Boise High School

Oct. 19, 2000

EAGLE, Idaho - The Santa Clara women's golf team finished 10th at the Bronco Fall Classic on Tuesday, but the team participated in more than a tournament while in Boise, they ate Italian.

Head coach Polly Schulze wanted to give her team something to reflect on upon their return from the Classic. Before the team's practice round Sunday morning, Schulze found what she was looking for in the morning paper. St. Joseph's High School was hosting an Italian Dinner as a fundraiser for a new gymnasium. At $9 a plate, Schulze thought this dinner would be the perfect outing for her team, and help the community they were in as well.

Schulze shared her idea with the head pro at BanBury Golf Course and he like her gesture so much, he gave Schulze a check to take over as a donation from the golf course. Organizers of the dinner were blown away that a team in town for athletic competition would donate to a local community cause.

"We had an awesome Italian dinner and the girls were very proud of themselves for helping the kids of Boise with their gymnasium," Schulze said. "I think they learned a little bit more of the value in making a contribution to others in need."

At the Classic, Santa Clara recorded rounds of 321 and 324, good for a 77-over-par 645. Redshirt freshman Jessica Monson led the team individually, tying for 23rd place with a 13-over 155.

The Broncos will close out the fall season at the Lady Matador Fall Classic, hosted by Cal State Northridge, October 30-31.
