Gross, Johnson Conclude Play at WCC Championships

April 17, 2001

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The Santa Clara's women's golf team concluded play at the West Coast Conference Championships this afternoon, held the past two days at the Windsor Golf Club, a par-72 layout measuring 5,818 yards.

The women's team was only able to field three golfers when play began yesterday morning, but went down to two golfers in the afternoon round, who played as individuals. Sophomore Katie Gross led the Broncos with a 283 scorecard, followed closely by freshman Katie Johnson's 305. Junior Sarah Dahm withdrew from competition yesterday due to a back injury.

San Francisco upset defending league champion Pepperdine for its second WCC title since the conference added women's golf five years ago. Don Emilie Arnaud earned individual medalist honors with a six-over 222 while teammate Susannah Laing was the tournament runner-up two strokes back. Pepperdine placed second, followed by Portland and Gonzaga. Loyola Marymount, San Diego and Saint Mary's do not sponsor women's golf programs.

The Broncos will next compete in San Luis Obispo in a dual meeting with Cal Poly on April 26.
