SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Broncos women's tennis team fell to Bay area rivals the USF Dons in a 6-1 decision on Friday, April 10th, at Degheri Center. The Broncos will enter the WCC tournament with an overall record of 8-10, and 2-3 in the WCC.
The Broncos came out strong early on during doubles play. Although senior Stephanie Galainena and sophomore Ashley Pane fell to USF's Cecilia Gratian and Jenni Heinser 8-4 at the No. 1 position, the Broncos rebounded with two consecutive doubles wins to earn the doubles point for the day. Senior Myra Davoudi and sophomore Carmen Pham defeated USF's Julia Wartenburger and Jessy Mokpoh, 8-1, while freshmen duo Kacie Wagner and Kimmi Cox overcame Mylene Martin and Sarah Oudomvilay, 8-6.
Despite the Broncos' strong showing in doubles, USF dominated singles play to take the win away from Santa Clara. "We played very well in doubles," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "A lot of the singles matches were tough losses for our players, but we're optimistic for the upcoming WCC tournament."
Before the match, seniors Myra Davoudi and Stephanie Galainena were honored for their years on the court for the Broncos. "Senior Day was a great way for us to honor Stephanie and Myra for their years of commitment and express our appreciation for their leadership," said Cabell. "They worked very hard throughout the season and we're very proud of them."
The Broncos will travel to San Diego later this week to compete in the WCC tournament on April 17-19.
