Bronco Women's Tennis Gears Up for WCC Action

April 16, 2009

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- The Santa Clara women's tennis team begins WCC tournament play this Friday, April 17th in San Diego. The Broncos received the sixth seed for the tournament and are looking forward to end their season with a strong finish.

The Broncos are 8-10 for the regular season and enter the tournament with 2-3 record in the WCC. As the sixth seed, the Broncos will face Saint Mary's, the third seed. The Broncos recently fell to Saint Mary's on April 5th, 7-0, but are hoping to knock the Gaels off and advance in the tournament.

"We just lost to them, and we always lose to them," said senior Myra Davoudi. "But we have a different lineup going in, and I think that's going to change things. Sometimes when you change things up a little you jump a little bit and things can go our way."

Bronco head coach Ben Cabell is also optimistic about the upcoming match, especially when it comes to the team's doubles play.

"We showed throughout the season that the doubles were our strength, and so we definitely feel good going into the doubles. It is always good because it gives us momentum when we win the doubles point, so we're looking forward to that," Cabell said.

Overall, Cabell and the rest of the team are very happy about their performances this year.

"There's big improvement over the last year," said Cabell. "One of our main things was to show that we are going in the right direction. We definitely accomplished that. I think a lot of it will tell by how we do in the WCC tournament."

The Broncos will begin tournament play this Friday, April 17th at 3:00 p.m. Check back with SantaClaraBroncos.com for updates.
