SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team opened the 2004 season with a victory, beating CS Hayward 10-6 this afternoon at the Leavey Pool. The match marked the Pioneers' season opener as well.

"I think we played a good overall game," SCU head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Hayward has improved since last season, so I think it was a good test for us. There are things that we need to improve on in practice, but I am happy with the way we played today."

The Pioneers took the early lead in the match as Elaine Mashburn scored after one minute and nine seconds had elapsed. The Broncos quickly tied the match 22 seconds later with a goal from junior Catherine Flynn. Flynn followed her goal with two more before the quarter ended, helping the Broncos to a 4-2 lead.

Sophomore Alanna Simpkins, junior Katy Shumm and freshman Katie Radvanyi each scored two goals a piece helping the Broncos to victory. Netminder Anne Ginotti tallied eight saves on the day.

The Bronco defense shut down CS Hayward in the second quarter allowing no goals. The Pioneers scored four goals in the last two quarters.

The Broncos will return to action next Saturday, when they travel to Santa Cruz for two contests. The first will be a rematch against CS Hayward at 1p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. battle with the host Slugs.
