Water Polo Wins Two Conference Contests

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned two conference victories today, defeating La Verne 14-2 and Whittier 16-6 today at UC Santa Cruz' East Field house. The Broncos improve to 10-8 on the season.

"We had a lot of offense today and I liked how it was spread out among the team," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "Everybody contributed."

Catherine Flynn led the Broncos with three goals against La Verne, while Danielle Mansfield, Katie Radvanyi and Andrea Evans notched two goals each. Erin Scollin added one goal and three steals, while Alanna Simpkins, Kellie Dunn, Kathleen Hamm and Courtney Titus also tallied one score each. Anne Ginotti guarded the cage and registered five blocks, one steal and one assist.

Santa Clara received a standout performance from Hamm against Whittier, as she posted a team-leading four goals, and added three steals and drew six kick outs. Katy Shumm added three goals, and two goals each were notched by Simpkins, Flynn, Dunn and Radvanyi. Mansfield added the final tally. Kristin Barnes guarded the net and recorded nine blocks and two assists.

"As I coach I was really happy with our performance today," Wilbur added. "Everything seemed to click well and we executed things we've been working on in practice."

The Broncos remain in Santa Cruz for a 9 a.m. match against Redlands tomorrow morning. Santa Clara will then drive back up to the valley for a 1:15 p.m. start at San Jose State.
