Water Polo Tops Sonoma State 7-4

LOS ANGELES - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team earned a 7-4 victory over Sonoma State in the second day of action at the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championship, hosted by Loyola Marymount's Burn Recreation and Aquatic Center.

Catherine Flynn led the Broncos with three goals, while Kathleen Hamm added two. Katy Shumm and Andrea Evans rounded out the Bronco scoring with one tally each. Anne Ginotti was in the cage for the Broncos and recorded six blocks, including a four-meter in the final period. She added two steals and two assists to her game totals.

"It was a pretty close game heading into the fourth quarter and Kathleen scored two clutch goals for us to seal the win," head coach Keith Wilbur explained.

The Broncos advance in the consolation bracket and are now 19-16 on the season. The team will next face eighth-seeded Chapman this afternoon at 3 p.m. Tournament action continues through Sunday, and the winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Championships, hosted by Stanford University, May 8-9 at the Avery Aquatic Center. This season marks the program's fourth at the Division I level. Santa Clara placed fifth in 2001 and '03 and the program's highest finish ever came in 2002, when the Broncos earned an upset victory to place fourth.
