April 18, 2004

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team hosted it second annual Alumni Game this afternoon at the Leavey Pool. The current Broncos defeated their former teammates by a 16-7 score.

Ten alumni returned to the mission campus. Regina Dinneen, Lara Williams and Darci Casinelli scored two goals each to lead the returners, while Kristy Kunasaki tallied one. Carrie Polhemus notched seven saves in goal. Also participating was Shannon Von Lehr, Liz Schurrit, Elizabeth Glotzbach and Emily Abbott. Coaching the squad was Christine Dindia.

"Days like these are always fun," head coach Keith Wilbur said post-match. "We have a lot of young alumni and we'd like to keep them involved with the program. We hope to grow this event a little bit more every year."

Prior to the start of the contest, Wilbur honored the team's two seniors, goalkeepers Alexandra Dalmau and Anne Ginotti.

Two of the Broncos' first three shots hit posts, but Santa Clara did take an early lead with the first of Catherine Flynn's three goals of the day. Alumni countered with Dinneen's tally. SCU scored three straight to close the quarter with a 4-1 lead. Amanda Ginn and Andrea Evans then notched second quarter goals for the current Broncos. Alumni made it 6-2 at the half with Kunasaki's score.

Santa Clara added three goals in the third, by Bryn Asher, Katie Radvanyi and Kellie Dunn. Defense then left the pool, as 12 goals were split between the teams in the fourth and final quarter. Williams notched a score with a long ball from mid-pool, while Dunn added a breakaway goal in the frame. Casinelli scored at the buzzer for the alumni to close the competition.

The two squads, family and friends ended the afternoon with a barbeque at Alumni Park.

The Broncos (18-15) conclude their season April 23-25 at the WWWPA Championships in Los Angeles. Game times and opponents will be announced early next week.
