SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's water polo team defeated Sonoma State 14-5 this afternoon at the Leavey Pool. The Broncos improve to 8-8 on the season, while the Seawolves remain winless at 0-8.

"It was a closer first half than I would have liked" head coach Keith Wilbur said, referring to his team's 5-2 lead at intermission. "However, we came out well in the third quarter and really played well the rest of the game. The match was a lot closer than the score showed. They're a first-year team, but their coach is really pointing them in the right direction."

Eight different Broncos scored, led by Catherine Flynn's four tallies. Katie Radvanyi added three goals and three steals, while Kathleen Hamm added two goals and two steals. Amanda Ginn, Alanna Simpkins, Bryn Asher, Andrea Evans and Mele Rehder added one goal each. Anne Ginotti and Kristin Barnes split time guarding the SCU net and recorded five blocks apiece.

The Broncos return to the pool next week for four matches. Santa Clara will play LaVerne (noon) and Whittier (5:30 p.m.) on Saturday at UC Santa Cruz. On Sunday, the Broncos will play Redlands at 9 a.m. at UCSC and the drive back up to the valley for a 1:15 p.m. start at San Jose State.
