Water Polo Places Fifth at WWWPAs

April 25, 2004

LOS ANGELES - Santa Clara University junior Catherine Flynn scored five goals to lead the Bronco women's water polo team in a 6-5 double-overtime win over CS San Bernardino to place fifth at the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Championship, hosted by Loyola Marymount's Burn Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Broncos close the 2004 season with a 21-16 record.

In a back-and-forth contest that saw three lead changes, the Coyotes tied the game at 5-5 on a goal from Sarah Reneker with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation. Both teams had man-up opportunities in the first extra frame, but were not able to capitalize. Bronco goalkeeper Kristin Barnes blocked a four-meter penalty shot in the first overtime, one of her 15 saves of the day.

"Any goal in overtime is a huge momentum swing for a team," head coach Keith Wilbur explained. "Penalty attempts are converted about 95 percent of the time, so the timing of Kristin's save turned out to be huge."

Flynn scored the game-winner with 2:20 remaining in the second overtime. Katie Radvanyi assisted on the play.

"The whole team played well," Wilbur added. "They worked hard and set up our chances nicely. We've been able to hold San Bernardino off this season, but they've been tight games and it's becoming a rivalry."

Alanna Simpkins added the Broncos' other goal, with 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter. Radvanyi also drew two kick outs, including a four-meter. Kathleen Hamm drew three kick outs.

Reneker finished with three goals for CSSB, and Erin Gallagher added two. The Coyotes close the tournament with a 23-16 record.

Flynn was named a second team All-WWPA selection, while Radvanyi earned honorable mention recognition.

This season marked the program's fourth at the Division I level. Santa Clara also placed fifth in 2001 and '03 and the program's highest finish ever came in 2002, when the Broncos finished fourth.
