Alumni Come Back to Challenge Broncos

Feb. 22, 2006

Santa Clara, Calif. - After a successful weekend of play, the Santa Clara women's water polo team will take a break to entertain past players on Saturday before hitting the pool for a Western Water Polo Association match with Cal State East Bay on February 25. The alumni game will be held at the Leavey Center Pool and begin at noon. Following the match will be a barbeque for alumni, current players, and their families.

Among the returning players that will compete in the contest are Emily Abbot ('03), Darci Cassinelli ('00), Anne Ginotti ('04), Elizabeth Glotzbach ('03), Becky Hong ('03), Kristy Kunisaki ('00), Elizabeth Schuricht ('01), Carrie Wei Pohlemus ('00), and Lara Williams.

"Since women's water polo is a relatively new sport at Santa Clara, the alumni game is great way for our current players to meet the players who got things started here. The first years are always the toughest when it comes to starting a program, so we have that much more respect for the players who were here at or near the beginning," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "This is also like a reunion for the alumni, so hopefully they will have a good time catching up with each other."

Last weekend, Santa Clara came away from the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament with an unblemished 4-0 mark, upping their overall record to 8-4. Senior Lindsey Bacolini paced the Broncos over the two-day tournament, finding the back of the net eight times, while freshman Claire Linney provided an offensive spark with five goals. Overall, Santa Clara outscored its four opponents by a combined total of 50-20. Goalies Kristin Barnes and Randahl Capurro manned the cage for the Broncos and did an excellent job turning all incoming attacks, combining for 33 blocks in the four victories.
