Davis, Calif. - No. 20 Santa Clara entered the Davis Shootout with a wave of confidence, winning its last seven matches. Today, the Broncos were able to extend it by one game, but lost a nailbiter in the second contest of the day to leave their winning streak at eight. In the morning, Santa Clara outlasted Cal State Bakersfield 14-10 to open up the two-day tournament, and came back to push No. 4 Loyola Marymount to overtime in the afternoon, though ultimately losing in a tough 8-6 battle. Lindsey Bacolini had a hat trick in each game to lead her team on the offensive end.

Santa Clara's record in 2006 now stands at 19-7 and will return to action tomorrow morning against UC San Diego on the second day of the Davis Shootout.

In the first match, Santa Clara led from the very beginning and never looked back, holding off a rally by Cal State Bakersfield in the fourth quarter. Two goals by Katie Radvanyi in the first quarter powered her team to the early lead and the Broncos had a 12-5 advantage heading into the final quarter, where the Roadrunners outscored them 5-2 to account for the final margin. Three playesr scored a hat trick for Santa Clara, as Lindsey Bacolini, Emily Bonk, and Christie Miller put the ball through the net three times. In addition, Andrea Evans, Elizabeth Perry, and Alanna Simpkins rounded the scorers with one goal apiece. Kristin Barnes led the Bronco defense with five blocks in the game.

In a late game that did not start until early evening, Bacolini was the top offensive force for Santa Clara with three goals, though Loyola Marymount was still able to withstand her outstanding individual performance to pull out the win. Radvanyi chipped in with two goals, while Claire Linney put the ball through the net once to account for the Broncos scoring. Linney scored with just 16 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime. Barnes was once again a stable force in the cage, shutting down eight Lion attacks.
