Santa Clara, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team exploded for 32 goals in two games, while only limiting the opposition to 12, in victories against Chapman and Pacific at the Leavey Center Pool today. In the first match, No. 20 Santa Clara overwhelmed Chapman by a score of 18-8, followed by a 14-4 showing against Pacific. Katie Radvanyi led the way for the Broncos in scoring, with seven total on the day.
Santa Clara improves to 17-6 on the season and returns to action next Friday with a home match against UC Santa Cruz. Game time is set to start at noon.
Against Chapman, Lindsay Bacolini and Katie Radvanyi each scored a hat trick to lead Santa Clara to the 18-8 victory. In addition, the Broncos got two goals apiece from Bryn Asher, Emily Bonk, Andrea Evans, and Claire Linney, while Brianna Anderson, Amy Lamb, Christie Miller, and Alanna Simpkins all found the back of the net once. Bonk had a strong all-around game in addition to her offensive prowess, with one assist and one steal to go along with her two kickouts drawn. On defense, Kristin Barnes, Randahl Capurro, and Katie Gilmartin all took turns guarding the goal, combining for 10 blocks.
"It was a good game at home. We came out strong and stuck to our game plan. They run a different offense than what we are accustomed to seeing, but we did a good job defending it," stated head coach Keith Wilbur.
In the following contest against Pacific, Radvanyi continued her strong offensive showing, putting the ball through the net on four occasions. Supporting Radvanyi, were Evans, Simpkins and Elizabeth Perry, who each accounted for two goals in the 14-4 triumph over the Tigers. Additionally, Bacolini, Linney, Bryn Asher, and Kendra Betke had one goal each. Once again, duties in the cage was split, this time between Barnes and Capurro and five saves were made in total.
"It was a good effort for a second game. Pacific played really hard and I think the best of our team really came out to play in the second half. It was a good overall day," said Wilbur.
