Asher Presented With Community Service Award

June 23, 2006

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Santa Clara Women's Water Polo player Bryn Asher was named the Comcast Community All-Star Award winner for the month of March. SCU Director of Athletics & Recreation Dan Coonan and Comcast representative Keshila Vallot presented the award to Asher at a SCU baseball game on April 17. She earned the award for her work with many groups in the community.

Asher, an engineering major from Tigard, Oregon, volunteered with Robotics for Kids, which works to build interest in children in the fields of Engineering and Robotics. Along with her work there, she assisted blind children at Chandler Trip with classroom work and with field trips. She also participated in Engineering Mentors, in which she tutored high school girls studying engineering subjects.

"Bryn was a great player to have on our team, not just because of what she did in the pool, but also because she is a great person," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "She has a good heart and she likes to help people."

Along with her efforts in community service, she has been an integral part of the women's water polo team. The senior driver scored 13 goals in the 2006 season and helped lead the team to a 25-8 record, the best in SCU Women's Water Polo history. Individually, she had an outstanding performance on March 3 against Cal-State East Bay in which she netted three goals in a 14-2 win.

The award, which is presented monthly during the academic year by Comcast, was introduced last year to spotlight the positive contributions that SCU student-athletes make in the local community. Cross country and track athlete Blossom Marimpietri received the award in February for her various community service projects.
