SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara women's track and field runners Mary Kriege and Grayson Murphy have combined to produce one of the best seasons in program history this spring. This week, they became the first two Bronco females to qualify for a postseason meet.

Kriege and Murphy will each run in two events at the NCAA West Preliminary Meet in Lawrence, Kan. May 26-28. Kriege is set to compete at the 5000m and 1000m distances, while Murphy will take park in the 3000m Steeplechase and 5000m events. Santa Clara's last postseason qualifier was Kevin Oliver, who competed at 10000 meters in 2013.

"Mary and Graysee have steadily improved all year and are ready to take full advantage of the opportunity they earned," head coach Felipe Montoro said.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH PETE CUSHMAN ON THE RUNNERS

Kriege: "Mary has had a fantastic career as a Bronco, and we're so excited that our team captain has the opportunity to close out her career in the track and field postseason. She's been all in for the 10k this entire year, and her best chance of advancing comes in that event. Her last two races show that she's advanced her fitness since her 10k mark back in early April. She's at her best at the right time of the year, and I feel very confident that she'll place higher than her seed, and has a good shot at getting into the top 12 and moving on."

Murphy: "Graysee, like Mary, has run her best over the last month of the season, and it seems she even made another jump in fitness this last week. She's a natural over the hurdles, and her best shot at advancing will be in the steeple. Her last steeple was a month ago, but she's got a lot of confidence with the event, and she'll be ready to go. She did such a great job competing and getting in the mix up front against very good fields at Oxy and USF, which is the kind of mindset needed at prelims."
