SCU Cross Country Teams Continue To Lead the Way Academically; Bronco Student Athletes Post 3.0 GPA For 16th time in 17 Quarters

Led by 16 Bronco student-athletes who posted a 4.0 grade point average and six teams who achieved a 3.5 or higher, Santa Clara University's student-athletes recorded a 3.116 grade point average (GPA) for the Spring 2012 quarter, topping 3.0 or better for the 16th time in 17 quarters. It is the second highest GPA for a quarter, only topped by the 3.14 GPA the Bronco student-athletes achieved during the Spring 2011 quarter.  Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.057.

In addition, 102 Bronco student-athletes achieved a 3.5 GPA or higher this quarter and 76 Bronco student-athletes have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. All told, 204 student-athletes achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher in the Spring 2012 quarter, with 182 student-athletes posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.  There were 57 student-athletes who posted a 3.7 term GPA and 36 have a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher.

It is worth noting that the Bronco men's tennis program achieved its highest term GPA in recent memory in the same year it earned its first NCAA tournament berth (advancing to the second round) and its highest-ever national ranking (29).

"It is terrific to see the 182 student-athletes post a GPA for the quarter above 3.0. It is the third time in four quarters it has been above 3.1.  With all the additional demands on their time with their sports, that is certainly an impressive accomplishment.  I applaud the efforts of Zoe Kranzler and Jason Stock, our academic services officers, and of course our coaches for creating a culture of academic success - one in which the student-athletes really thrive," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.

The men's cross country team led all Bronco teams with a 3.527 GPA during the Spring 2012 quarter.  It is the fourth straight quarter they have led the men's side.  They also have the top cumulative GPA at 3.461 as well.

On the women's side, the cross country team posted the highest GPA at 3.485 for the Spring 2012 quarter.  It is the fifth time in six quarters the women's team has led the women's side in term GPA.  Women's cross country has the highest cumulative GPA at 3.436

" "I am once again very proud of our teams continued academic success. While we really stress academics in recruiting and of course throughout the career of our student athletes, it is always nice to see tangible results of their hard work," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.

Thirteen Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or higher for the Spring 2012 quarter, with six teams posting a 3.3 GPA or higher for the Spring 2012 quarter. In addition, 12 teams have a 3.0 GPA or better for their cumulative GPA - with all but two women's sports posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.

The 13 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Spring 2012 quarter include: men's cross country, men's track, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's rowing, women's cross country, women's track, women's golf, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, volleyball and women's water polo.
