STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's basketball dropped its first regular-season game in the lower 48 states this season by a 63-41 margin Wednesday against the University of the Pacific at the Spanos Center.
The Broncos led by a 17-13 score with 6:09 remaining in the first half before the Tigers (2-0) made a 23-4 run to take a 36-21 halftime lead. The Tigers then stretched their lead to as high as 25 points before settling for the largest margin of victory ever recorded for Pacific in the season series between these two teams.
Early in the second half the Broncos (2-2) climbed to within 10 on two free throws from Brian Jones (Carson, Calif.), but the Tigers answered with a 10-2 run led by junior Mike Hahn (Lincoln, Neb.), who scored four of his six points during the run.
The Broncos point total, 41, was the lowest for Santa Clara since they scored 35 points in a loss to St. Mary's in January of 1989. The game also marked the first time in 40 consecutive games that the Broncos failed to convert on at least one three-point attempt.
Senior forward Jamie Holmes (Merced, Calif.) led the way with 12 points, including 10 in the first half before fouling out with 5:42 left in the game. It marked Holme's second time to foul out this season and the third of his career. Jones added 11 points for Santa Clara.
The Broncos are off for the Thanksgiving holidays until Wednesday when they face San Jose State in an 8 p.m. tipoff. Originally scheduled for the San Jose Arena, the contest will be the second-game of a double-header with the Bronco women at SJSU's Event Center.
