SCU Women's Crew Races Sacramento State, UC Davis

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Santa Clara University's women's crew team and first-year head coach Anne Kennedy opened the 2010 season over the weekend on the water of Lake Natoma in Sacramento. SCU's Varsity 4 "A" boat finished second in the Varsity 4s.

"The highlight of the day was a really strong effort from the V4 `A'," said Kennedy. "These girls came out hungry after their race in the 8 and rowed an aggressive, consistent race. We learned from our first race and immediately put those lessons into action. That was great to see."

Prior to the Varsity 4s, the Varsity 8s saw the host Hornets place the top two boats, giving Sac State the James Farwell Cup title. SCU showed promising speed in the first half of the race but slipped behind in the second thousand meters.

VARSITY EIGHT RACE
Sac V8 - 6:50.1

Sac V4"B" - 8:20.6
Sac N4 - 8:21.4
SCU V4 "B" -8:52

The team followed that race up with a six-team event hosted by UC Davis on Sunday. The field was tough, featuring Stanford, California, Sonoma State, USC and UC Davis.

"We went out little tentative and lost contact early in the V8," said Kennedy about Sunday's results. "We have yet to put together a full 2000m race, but this is a young group and we are learning so much every time we go to the starting line. Davis was a great opportunity to get the entire team racing in eights and fours, and it was really great to see our novice 4+ come down the course for the first time. We'll be focusing on consistency of effort this week in practice, as we know we have more speed to bring forth if we are going to be competitive in May."
