Men's Rowing Set for 41st San Diego Crew Classic this Weekend

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Following a span of three weeks without competition, Santa Clara men's rowing heads south for the 41st San Diego Crew Classic this Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6 in Mission Bay.

"We are just coming off a really aggressive spring break period in which the team was participating in a high volume of work," head coach Jay Farwell said. "I am really pleased with the progress the team is making and really look forward to seeing how they respond to the San Diego Crew Classic environment."

The Broncos will take part in the Cal Cup Varsity 8 and Junior Varsity 8 events with heats on Saturday and finals on Sunday.

"Both events are filled with a lot of talented crews and this is the first large-scale regatta of the year," Farwell said. "It will give us a good indication of where we stand in regards to our west coast competitors."

Varsity 8

Varsity 8 will compete in the third Mens Collegiate Cal Cup heat at 7:40 a.m. Saturday against San Diego, Occidental, Notre Dame, MIT, Loyola Marymount, and Southern California. The lineup is as follows:

Coach Farwell on Varsity 8: "This is a really solid group and it will be the first time we have run this lineup in competition."

Junior Varsity 8

Junior Varsity 8 will compete in the third Mens Collegiate 2V heat at 9:50 a.m. Saturday against Stanford, Northeastern, Gonzaga, UC San Diego, UCLA, Cal State Long Beach and Cal (B). The lineup is as follows:

Coach Farwell on Junior Varsity 8: "This is also a solid group with four more freshmen in the ranks."

"We are a young crew; we intend to take advantage of the opportunity presented by San Diego Crew Classic," Farwell said. "This should be a great springboard for our upcoming races at the Stanford Invitational, WIRA and the Western Invitational in mid-May."
