SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 24th-ranked Santa Clara University men's soccer team cruised to an easy 9-1 win to open their 2002 season, giving first-year head coach Cameron Rast his first win on the collegiate level.
The game began at a very frantic pace with both teams getting out of the gates aggressively. The Broncos (1-0-0) jumped out to the lead in the 21st minute when the Argonaut defense had a mental lapse and scored an own goal. 19 minutes later freshman Anthony Igwe broke away from the defense on a precise pass from Jamil Walker to score the team's second goal and his first as a Bronco.
Just before halftime NDNU (0-2-1) went a man down when Anthony Delgado picked up a red card following a yellow card that was assessed to his teammate Leon Putrus.
Santa Clara capitalized on the man-down, when Walker scored his first of three goals on the night just nine minutes into the second half off an assist from Devin Skrade. Following Putrus' second yellow card in the 57th minute, the Broncos took advantage of NDNU who was now two men down. SCU scored their next five goals over a 12-minute span, two of which were scored by Walker.
Freshman Ronnie Magsaysay picked up his first goal at the collegiate level on a penalty kick in the 70th minute after he was tackled in the box. Junior Audren Cashman scored off a penalty re-start from just outside the box less than a minute later to give the Broncos an 8-0 lead.
Notre Dame de Namur scored their only goal at the 84:26 mark when Erik Michon headed home a pass from Edward Hackbarth. The goal was one of only three shots on the night for the Argonauts.
Santa Clara scored their ninth goal of the evening at the 86:38 mark when Burke Ewers took a long feed from Jeff Scott and beat David Montgomery on the breakaway.
Walker's three goals on the evening matches his entire season output from 2001, while the nine Bronco goals are the most ever scored in a season-opening game in the program's history.
Santa Clara continues its season later on this week, travelling to Seattle, Wash., to take on the seventh-ranked Huskies of Washington.
