This Week: USF/Diadora Classic
Santa Clara men's soccer will take on Brown and Harvard this weekend in the USF/Diadora Classic in San Francisco, Calif. The Broncos will take on the Brown Bears at 5 p.m. Friday night before heading back into the city on Sunday for a meeting with Harvard at Noon. Both games will be played at Negoesco Stadium on the campus of the University of San Francisco. Last year Santa Clara went 1-1 in the tournament, defeating Oregon State in overtime Friday night before losing to UCLA in the championship match on Sunday.
Santa Clara vs. Brown
Santa Clara and Brown will meet for the first time in the two school's history Friday evening in San Francisco. The Bears are members of the Ivy League and posted a 7-7-2 record during the 2001 season. They return 21 letterwinners from last year's squad, including seven starters.
Scouting the Bears
Brown enters Friday evening's contest with a 2-2-1 record, having lost its last match to Harvard last Saturday by a score of 2-1. The Bears are led by Adom Crew's 13 points, which have come on six goals and one assist. Ibrahim Diane and Seth Quidachi-Swan have each scored twice and sit in second on the team in goals scored. Christopher Gomez has played in four of the five matches and taken most of the minutes between the pipes for Brown, posting a 1.37 goals-against average.
Santa Clara vs. Harvard
Santa Clara and Harvard will meet for the first time in the two school's history Sunday afternoon in San Francisco. The Crimson are members of the Ivy League and posted a 10-5-1 record during the 2001 season and were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the first round. They return 17 letterwinners from last year's squad, including seven starters. Sunday will be the second consecutive weekend in which the Broncos played a team whose mascot was a color. Santa Clara faced the Stanford Cardinal last Sunday in Palo Alto.
Scouting the Crimson
Harvard enters the USF/Diadora Classic with a 5-1-0 overall record having won its last four matches and defeating Brown in its last match by a score of 2-1 in Providence, R.I., last weekend. The Crimson are led offensively by Kevin Ara and Fritz Ladd. Ara has posted seven goals and two assists on the year, of which four of his goals have come in the last two matches. Ladd has scored six goals and is second on the team in points with 12. Jaime Roth has spent the majority of the time between the pipes for Harvard and has a goals-against average of 2.05 in just over 438 minutes of play.
Last Week: Broncos Drop Two Matches to Pac-10 Foes
Santa Clara dropped both of its matches last week to its Bay Area Pac-10 rivals, California and Stanford. The Broncos had their rally fall just short in Thursday night's match against Cal in Buck Shaw Stadium, with the final score favoring the Golden Bears by a 2-1 margin. Jason Cunliffe scored his first collegiate goal in the loss, hammering home a loose ball from about 18 yards out that cut the Cal lead in half with 10 minutes to play. The Broncos could get no closer despite many last ditch efforts to tie the match. Sunday's match against top-ranked Stanford was a very close game for the first 57 minutes before Stanford reeled off three goals between the 58th and 68th minute marks in the second half. Despite out-shooting the Cardinal by a 9-7 margin, the Broncos fell to 4-3-0 on the season.
Up Next for the Broncos: San Diego State at Home, Portland on the Road
The Broncos will remain in the Bay Area next weekend as they take part in the USF/Diadora Classic next Friday and Sunday at Negoesco Stadium on the campus of the University of San Francisco. Santa Clara will take on Brown University in the first game Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. and will conclude its play in the tournament with a noon kickoff against Harvard on Sunday. The Broncos have never met either of the two Ivy League schools they will face next weekend in San Francisco.
