Men's Soccer Edged 1-0 By Wisconsin In OT

Sept. 5, 2008

MADISON, Wis. - The Santa Clara men's soccer team faced its third setback of a very young season as the Badgers of Wisconsin slipped past the Broncos, 1-0, in the 91st minute Friday night.

It has been 11 years since the Broncos were dealt three straight losses to open the season, and the first ever under the direction of head coach Cameron Rast.

After a very physical 90 minute battle that was filled with a total of 45 fouls and four yellow cards, the Badgers brought the game to a close with a goal in the 91st minute. After a foul and yellow card were issued to sophomore Jalil Anibaba just 1 minutes, 28 seconds into overtime, Pablo Delgado fired a free kick towards Bronco keeper Kevin Klasila. The ball found the foot of Taylor Waspi, who tapped in the ball after Klasila was forced to the ground on the initial strike.

Possession was mainly held by Wisconsin as it out-shot Santa Clara 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the first half.

The Broncos had four opportunities to score the ball. Kellen Wantulok had the first chance in the 34th minute of the match, but his shot was saved by Badgers' keeper Alex Horwath. Then back-to-back attempts by Aaron Clubb and Jalil Anibaba in the 79th and 81st minutes could not find the back of the goal either, as both were stopped by Horwath. The Broncos final attempt of the match came from freshman Brandon Zimmerman in the 84th minute but was also unsuccessful.

The Broncos return to action looking for win No. 1 of the season on Sunday, Sept. 7 against the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee. The game is slated for a 10 a.m. PT start.
