SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's soccer freshman Connor Mitchell was named the West Coast Conference's Player of the Week, it was announced Monday. The forward helped the Broncos to a 1-0-1 week as he scored the game-winning goal against the Cardinal of Stanford.
Mitchell's goal was scored in the 95th minute of Saturday's contest against Stanford. The golden goal was on a 10-yard cross-goal shot from the right side of the penalty area. Helping set up the play were freshman Brandon Zimmerman and sophomore Jalil Anibaba. Earlier in the week, Mitchell played a role in helping the Broncos to a 1-1 tie with the Spartans of San Jose State.
A native of Bend, Ore., Mitchell is tied for first on the team with two goals thus far and is tied for second with four points.
The Broncos open their 2008 WCC schedule this weekend in the Pacific Northwest. Santa Clara squares off with Portland on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m., and then battles Gonzaga on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m.
