No. 13 Broncos Win Twice In Rodeo Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 13 Santa Clara men's water polo team picked up two wins today, improving to 15-9 overall, defeating Cal Baptist, 9-8, and Bucknell, 13-9, on the second day of the Rodeo Tournament at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.

A total team effort gave Santa Clara a victory in a tight game against Cal Baptist.  After playing to a 1-1 tie in the first quarter, the Broncos took a 4-2 lead into halftime.  In the third quarter, SCU was outscored, 3-2, but retained a one-goal lead heading into the final quarter.  The Broncos and Lancers scored three goals each in the final quarter, with SCU scoring the final goal for the win. 

Seniors Stephen Hobbs and Nick Poggetti paced the offense with two goals each.  Also scoring was seniors Mitch Klipa and John Radvanyi, junior Daley Meistrell, sophomore Patrick Weiss, and freshman Theo Nasser.  Senior Josh Luebke notched three assists and a steal.  Klipa and junior James Case had two assists and two steals apiece.  Weiss also had two steals.  Junior goalie Michael Wishart had yet another outstanding performance, saving 15 shots.

Big games offensively by Case, Poggetti, and redshirt sophomore Travis Greco helped lead Santa Clara to 13-9 victory over Bucknell later in the day.  The Broncos jumped all over the Bison in the first quarter, winning the period, 4-1.  Bucknell climbed within reach by half with SCU leading, 6-4, after 16 minutes of play.  The Broncos outpaced the Bison in the third with four goals to Bucknell's two.  Both teams scored three goals in the final period.

Case scored four goals and Poggetti and Greco had three each.  Also scoring was Meistrell (2), and Zylstra.  Meistrell paired his two goals with three assists and two steals.  Klipa also had a multi-assist game.  Case also had two steals.  Wishart had 14 blocks, one steal, and three assists.
