SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 11 Santa Clara men's water polo team fell to No. 4 Stanford, 17-6, this evening at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.  The Broncos had six different goal-scorers in the losing effort.

Junior James Case won the opening sprint for the Broncos but they couldn't convert on their first possession. During Stanford's first time down the pool, senior Stephen Hobbs came up with a big steal, but SCU once again couldn't hit the back of the cage.  On the following play, the Cardinal came down and were awarded a 6-on-5 opportunity, but the shot went high.  Eventually, Stanford scored the first goal of the game with 5:30 to go in the quarter to break the ice.

Cardinal goalie Brian Pingree made the first of several quality saves on the Broncos next offensive rush, and continued to frustrate the Broncos throughout the game. Stanford converted on their next possession on a five-meter penalty shot at 4:03 to take a 2-0 lead.

The Broncos nearly got their first goal of the game when junior goalie Michael Wishart sprung freshman Tucker Carlson on a breakaway, but the try was foiled by Pingree.  The Cardinal added one more goal at six seconds before the end of the quarter.

Santa Clara finally got its first goal of the game in the second quarter when junior Daley Meistrell fed sophomore Patrick Weiss at two meters on the power play with 6:27 to go in the half.  Senior Josh Luebke and Case also scored in the quarter for the Broncos, but Stanford scored six times to take a 9-3 lead into half.

Santa Clara got another goal in the third on Hobbs' shot with 2:53 left in the third, but the Cardinal put the game even further out of reach with five goals to make it 14-4.

In the fourth, Poggetti and Akerland netted goals to finish out the Broncos goal-scoring.  Stanford added three more goals to put the final score at 17-6.

Junior goalie Michael Wishart played three quarters, saving three shots.  Sophomore John Nash relieved Wishart at the start of the fourth and saved two shots.

The Broncos are now 17-10 overall on the season and will next face Pacific on the road on Fri. Nov. 5 at 3 p.m.
