ATLANTA, Ga. - The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has selected Annie Garrison of Santa Clara University and Cara Consuegra of the University of Iowa as the Association's 2001 WBCA Scholarship Award winners. These awards are presented annually to two women's basketball players in any of the five WBCA collegiate divisions (NCAA I, II, III, NAIA, Junior/Community College) who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to the sport of women's basketball and to academic excellence. These awards enable deserving student-athletes to complete their undergraduate degrees or to begin work on advanced degrees. Each award is in the amount of $1,000.
"Annie and Cara are both outstanding student-athletes and are very deserving of our WBCA Scholarship," said WBCA Chief Executive Officer Beth Bass. "On behalf of the WBCA membership I want to congratulate them and wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
Garrison and Consuegra will be formally presented their awards during the Jostens-Berenson Awards Luncheon, Sunday, April 1, at 12 noon in the St. Louis Ballroom of the Adam's Mark Hotel. The Jostens-Berenson Awards Luncheon is a program of the 2001 WBCA National Convention, held in St. Louis in conjunction with the NCAA Division I Women's Final Four.
Garrison, a 6-3 forward/center, is the all time leading shot blocker at Santa Clara with 160 career blocks and a three-time All West Coast Conference player. Garrison ranks second on the school's all-time shooting chart hitting an impressive 54.3 percent (293-of-540) of her career field goal attempts. As a junior, she was named to the first team All-WCC for the second consecutive year and was twice named Rawlings/WCC Player of the Week. As a sophomore she was selected the 1999 WCC Defender of the Year. She is a native of Saratoga, Calif., and is the daughter of Lou and Fran Garrison.
Consuegra, a 5-8 guard, earned 2001 Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player and a place on the All-Tournament Team. She became the 13th player in Big Ten history to record over 1,000 points and 500 assists during her career. She finished the 2000-01 regular season ranked first in the Big Ten for assists during conference games (116). She broke a Big Ten Tournament record for most free throws made in a single tournament game (14), and tied a tournament record for most free throws made in a single tournament game (11). Her accolades include 2001 first-team Verizon Academic All-District Women's Basketball and tournament MVP of the Gazette Hawkeye Challenge. She is a native of Mount Airy, Md., and the daughter of Robin and Gerard Consuegra.
Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women's basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game in all of its aspects as an amateur sport for women and girls.
