SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The transformation of Santa Clara Athletics hit another benchmark as the process of replacing the playing surface in Leavey Center has concluded.
The court, which features a large stain painting of a photograph of Santa Clara University's iconic Mission Church, is now available for the men's and women's basketball teams, as well as volleyball, to utilize for offseason workouts and summer camps.
The three-month process came to a close with the installation of new baskets during the last few days, though a few cosmetic items such shot clocks and scorer's table still need to be installed.
Tinker Hatfield, Nike's vice president for design and special projects, designed the floor, which is believed to be the first of its kind. No known playing surface incorporates an image of a campus building in its design.
The Mission painting was applied on the floor in May through a series of layers of stain in different colors, followed by layers of varnish. The floor replacement began at the conclusion of the 2015-16 basketball season.
Santa Clara Athletics officially unveil the floor this summer on a date to be determined. The volleyball team will hold the first competition on the floor when it plays host to Pacific on Sept. 27.
Men's basketball coach Herb Sendek and women's coach Bill Carr were the first to hoist shots on the new floor.
