SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's and women's basketball teams, along with volleyball, will have a new playing surface for the 2016-17 season.
Construction to replace the Leavey Center floor, which is 14-years old, began this week, with the process expected to last approximately three months.
Once the current surface is removed, new cabling and wiring will be installed before the new floor is laid down.
Through Nike's partnership with the school, Tinker Hatfield, the company's vice president for design and special projects, has created the floor design, which will incorporate the recently unveiled athletics marks.
"We are in the final stages of floor design," said director of athletics Renee Baumgartner. "This is an incredible opportunity to enhance the brand of the University and athletics. Bronco fans will be excited because of its unique design."
Cost of the project will be covered primarily through private donations.
Santa Clara University Operations is managing the project, including scheduling a wide variety of outside contractors.
This project is the second recent improvement to Leavey Center. The men's and women's basketball teams utilized new locker rooms this past season.
