SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore Lena Gipson compiled her first double-double to lead the Santa Clara women's basketball team to a 60-42 victory over the Melbourne Roos Tuesday night at the Leavey Center. Gipson tied the game-high 16 points and pulled down and game-high 13 rebounds in the Broncos' lone exhibition game of the season.
Santa Clara opened the 2008-09 campaign on Friday, Nov. 14 at Cal State Fullerton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.
Two more Broncos registered double-figure points as senior Claire Goins and redshirt freshman Becky Goll tallied 11 points each.
The Roos has one in double-figures as Adrianna Cann tied the game-high 16 points.
The Broncos held the lead from the very beginning as Elizabeth Doran opened with a solid layup, 2-0. Santa Clara stormed to a hefty 23-4 advantage with 8:36 remaining in the first half on a layup by Goins. SCU led by 19 points. However, two minutes later Melbourne began to chip away at the lead beginning with a jumper by Alana Wallis, 23-6, and ending with a trey by Cann, 30-20. Goins responded in the final seconds to give Santa Clara a 12-point edge, 32-20, going into halftime.
The second half was quiet as the two teams traded points. At 4:24, Gipson made the score 50-28 on a layup and at 4:01 a trey by Kathy Willinsky put the Broncos back up 53-31. Another trey, this time from freshman Kendall Keith gave SCU another 22-point lead, 56-34. Santa Clara created a 24-point gap, its largest of the game, on free throws by Goins with two minutes left. At 0:52, Cann made the last basket for the Roos for the final score, 60-42.
Santa Clara out-shot Melbourne 35.7 to 27.3 from the field, and out-blocked the Roos 5-to-2.
