SCU Finishes Strong at the WIRA Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Seven Santa Clara University men's and women's crews raced Sunday in the final day of competition at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Lake Notoma.

The Bronco women's varsity eight completed in the petite final and finished the race in fourth place, four seconds ahead of fifth-place Saint Mary's College. In one of the closest races of the day, the SCU women's novice lightweight four finished fourth in the petite final in a time of 8:18.6, narrowly edged by third place UC San Diego's 8:18.1.

In the only other women's action for Santa Clara, the second varsity eight finished fifth in the petite final with a time of 7:42.6.

"We're really happy with the way things went this weekend," said SCU women's head coach Stephanie Shepherd. "We changed our lineups around a bit in some of the races and it paid off. All things considered, I was pleased with our final results this year."

In men's action, the Bronco notice lightweight four finished in third-place with a time of 7:34.7. The varsity eight was fourth in the petite final in a time of 6:17.6, just two seconds behind third-place UC Irvine.

The men's second novice eight was third overall, while the men's pair finished fifth.
