The Santa Clara men's crew competed at the 40th annual Head of the Charles regatta on Sunday afternoon on Boston, Mass. SCU's varsity eight placed 37th in the championship level race.

"This wasn't a great race, but it was a pretty solid performance from this young crew," said head caoch Tony Barcia. "It leaves us plenty of room for improvement throughout the next few months as we prepare for the focus of our season, which starts in March. While we would have liked to have a better showing, it makes it clear where we are right now and what we have to do to get to where we want to be."

The Head of the Charles is tabbed as the world's largest spectator event as over 300,000 fans have lined the banks of the Charles river to watch the world's largest regatta.

"The energy was amazing," said junior Mike Rhoads. "Having that many fans cheering us on really fired us up and was different than any other race I have been a part of."

"Being a part of such an amazing event propelled us to new levels," said Trevor Gray. "It was a great experience for SCU rowing. There is a lot of room for improvement in this field of national athletes."
