Women's Rowing and Cross Country to "Jog for Jill" October 13

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's rowing has a long history or giving back and helping the community. Continuing that tradition, the team will take part in "Jog for Jill" on Sat., Oct. 13 at 8 a.m. in Baylands Park, Sunnyvale, Calif. to raise money and awareness for lung cancer. The 5k walk/run will be co-hosted by Santa Clara cross country and will be held before the Santa Clara Bronco Invite.

Jill Costello was a coxswain on the Cal varsity rowing team when she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009. Costello continued to compete with her team and helped Cal finish second at the NCAA Championships in 2010 before passing away two months later.

"I thought it was a problem that the "Jog for Jill" series was exploding all over the country, with events as far as New York and Florida, but there was originally nothing here on the Peninsula in the fall," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "Jill was originally from San Francisco and her connection to our sport, and her goal of eliminating the social stigma of lung cancer as a "smoker's disease", made it an obvious choice for our fall community service project. I am looking forward to running this for many years to come, and having it be a part of our tradition."
