SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team defeated Cal Poly by a score of 2-1 in their its first of two Saturday games at the Cal Poly Tournament.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the Broncos starting pitcher Kelley Johnson, scoring their lone run in the first inning on a Holly Ballard single.
Johnson would settle down following the first inning as she allowed only two more hits through the next six innings en route to her first victory on the season. Johnson finished the game with two strikeouts.
Tracie Hall provided the lumber for Santa Clara, going 3-for-4 on the day with one run batted in. Hall's game-winning RBI came in the fifth inning as she singled home Kristi Harrington from third base.
Harrington provided the only other run for the Broncos earlier in the fifth inning when she singled to right field to score Lauren Fissori who also reached base with a single to right field.
All in all, the Broncos pounded out eight hits on the day, roughing up Cal Poly's starting pitcher Eva Nelson, who threw 4 1/3 innings on the day, allowing both runs on five hits while walking one and striking out one.
The Broncos improved to 4-3 on the season with the win and will face Utah State at 7 p.m. to finish out day two at the Cal Poly Tournament. Santa Clara will conclude its play at the tournament on Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against UC Santa Barbara.
