In the second game, the Broncos got an early lead producing the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Kristi Harrington singled to left field and eventual scored off of a single from Rachel Sherman to put the Broncos on the board. Santa Clara continued to produce offensively in the second starting with a lead off walk by Deanna Rodriguez. Lauren Fissori then moved Rodriguez to second with a sacrifice bunt. Up next, Sydney Wiginton grounded out to second enabling Rodriguez to take third. Rodriguez scored on a single up the middle by teammate Coresta Salas. Salas then promptly stole second moving her into scoring position. Harrington hit another single scoring Salas, putting her second RBI of the game in the record book.
During the bottom of the fourth, the Broncos left fielder Wiginton sustained a broken jaw while attempting to steal second base. She was transported to Valley Medical Center via ambulance. Head Coach Marcy Crouch commented on the mentality of the players after the injury: "It's always hard when a player gets injured, but if anything I think it made us a little more focused." The team took a moment to compose and came back ready to play.
They fired up offensively again in the fifth and produced five runs in the bottom of the inning. Among the great hits of the inning was Sherman's triple to right field that drove in three runs. Once Santa Clara had a led of 8-0 over the Lumberjacks the home plate umpire made the decision to call the game.
Santa Clara pitcher Rodriguez was able to shut down the Humblodt State offense allowing no runs and only two hits. She put down the win in the record books improving her record to 3-2 on the season. Humboldt State pitcher Kara Roberts took the loss for the Jacks.
In the first game, Santa Clara took the early lead over Humboldt State by producing one run in the bottom of the second. The Broncos held this lead until the top of the fourth inning when Lumberjack player Candice Brooke doubled to left center staring their seven run rally. The Broncos would battle back in the fifth and sixth innings bringing in three more runs, but the Humboldt State offense had already finalized their winning score in the sixth scoring one more run leaving the score 8-4.
Shona Guevara recorded the win for the Jacks as Santa Clara pitch Kelley Johnson fell to 2-1 on the season.
The Broncos will return to action this Friday, as they travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. for the "Softball by the Beach" tournament. Their first game against Oregon is slated to begin at Elings Park at 9 a.m.
