SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell twice today at the "Softball by the Beach" Invitational, hosted by UC Santa Barbara at Elings Park. The Broncos fell to 7-10 on the season after dropping a 12-0 decision to BYU and a 4-0 score to Illinois.
Freshman Jennifer Ponzo took the loss for the Broncos in the first game this afternoon, which was called in the fifth-inning, due to the eight-run rule.
In the second contest, the Broncos started a rally in the top of the seventh with consecutive base hits by sophomore Rachel Sherman and junior Roni Rivera, but SCU couldn't convert. Senior pitcher Deanna Rodriguez took the loss.
"Our girls were visibly upset after the first game," head coach Marcy Crouch said. "We just didn't compete. We played much better against Illinois, but the breaks just didn't fall our way."
Santa Clara will close weekend action against tournament host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
"Our goal tomorrow is to go all out and give it everything we have," Crouch added. "We're going to leave it all out on the field and try to end this tournament with a victory."
